NEARStars beginning reading program is created for elementary English language learners. We currently serve students of Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Island, and other ethnic groups from high-poverty, non-English language backgrounds. In school year 2003-2004, NEARStar is being delivered to 68 schools, serving over 7,582 English language learners and 826 teachers in grades K-6. NEARStars developmental schools span the United States and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific representing a range of urban, suburban, and rural settings. Our schools are located in 16 states Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, New Mexico, North Carolina, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Washington as well as in American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the District of Columbia, and Guam.
